Liverpool is home to the world's most famous horse race - the Grand National. Every April up to 150,000 punters from across the globe descend on Aintree for three days of top-class racing and to savour the party spirit. It is not just the horses that are on display – it is also renowned for its daring dresses and glamorous hats.  It is on “Ladies Day” that the eyes of the world are on the revellers at Aintree as the event lives up to Liverpool’s reputation as being the fashion and capital of the UK.The Grand National has been a key part of Merseyside's sporting landscape since it was first run way back in 1839.The handicapsteeplechase takes place over 4 miles 514 yards with 30 fences to be cleared and it's the ultimate test for horses and jockeys alike as they battle it out for £1million in prize money. On Grand National day itself, whilst some 70,000 people pack out Aintree on Grand National Day, the race is watched by a global audience of around 600 million across more than 140 countries. This is a massive date in Liverpool's social calendar. Race-goers over the three days typically down some 38,000 vodka shots, 250,000 pints of beer and 50,000 cocktails. Around £250million is gambled on the big race with all eyes on the world's greatest steeplechase.
